Apr '03 [Home] Vienna Besieged Turkish forces conquered Hungary and Serbia and then besieged imperial Vienna, the "window to the West" (Vindobona)—for eighteen days in 1529 (September 27-October 15) and again for two months until the late summer of 1683 (depicted by Frans Geffels here). The first Turkish leader was Süleyman lI, the other, Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa. This repulsion constitutes for some the climax of the Turkish Wars and the salvation of Christianity. To commemorate, church bells ring daily at noon and six throughout Europe.
